Happy 500 Deryk
Although born in Edmonton, Alberta, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone who would question his loyalties to this city. Deryk Engellands’ career began with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL and it’s only fitting that he would return 14 years later to play for the Vegas Golden Knights. With plenty of skill, a heart of gold, and a son named Cash, he is as much Vegas as Vegas itself. In the first regular-season game held at T-Mobile Arena, Engelland recieved a pass at the point from Brendan Leipsic which he sent barreling past Arizona goaltender Antti Raanta. It was in that moment that Dave Goucher uttered four words that will stick with me forever. “It’s the hometown hero.” My girlfriend and I sat quietly as a near perfect script unfolded before us. We watched on as an entire city let out all emotion.
As with most of the players on this team, Engelland is playing far above expectations. He finds himself six points shy of his career high in only 31 games played. A career-high which will be broken in short order. Until then, I want to congratulate the old man of the group on his 500th NHL game by sharing a memory which many of us hold deep in our hearts. Deryk Engelland sending one down main street towards Colton Orr.
